Re:Test Develops a Thermomechanical Fatigue (TMF) Test for GE

GE purchased a loadframe and TMF software from MTS, and used their own induction heater and temperature controller. Since they had a multi-vendor environment, it was difficult for them to get support to set the test up. They contracted with Re:Test to develop the test, and provide training to the operators. Thermomechanical Fatigue (TMF) testing presents challenges because both Thermal Strain and Mechanical Strain are controlled independently. This requires precise real-time processing of the specimen temperature to calculate Thermal Strain. This strain is subtracted from the total measured strain to arrive at mechanical strain. Any noise on the temperature readout can cause havoc in the control system, and inductive coils are notoriously noisy.
