Automotive exhausts, mufflers (silencers), flex couplings and manifolds are subjected to a highly complex loading environment. Firing pulses, road input, temperature and fluids all combine to create a complexity of stresses that must be accurately reproduced to identify the appropriate critical locations. Test systems also become complex, as they attempt to induce vibrations into the system though engine and hanger inputs while providing the appropriate thermal loading and without altering the dynamic behavior of the assembly. Road data collection and analysis is also challenging because of the complexity of the environment. A subtle difference in the simulation can lead engineers along the wrong path for design modifications.
