Re:Test Engineers can help you with Component Test Design.
Most components are subjected to a complex environment of forces, accelerations, temperatures, and fluids. While computer models are improving in their ability to accurately predict the life of components, the highly non-linear nature of the environment should ultimately be simulated in a physical test. In all cases, careful attention needs to be paid to the input loads and the boundary conditions to ensure the dynamic stress distribution is accurately reproduced. If it is not, test results are compromised. Critical locations that lead to failure are incorrectly identified, and design modifications are not targeted to the area of weakness. Designing a component test requires a significant amount of experience, especially if the test article is a structure, assembly or component with complex geometry and multiple loading axes. Many different parameters are used to distil the operating environment into a lab test that provides accurate information as inexpensively and as quickly as possible. The process begins with a complete analysis of the environment via Finite Element (FE) models, free-body diagrams or field data acquisition. The loading is then broken down into an efficient, short history (sinusoids, peak-valley-time--PVT, block profiles, random vibration control, real time simulation etc.), and the results are carefully evaluated to relate them to operating life.
